Do GHS labels leave room for interpretation? They shouldn’t – at all.

Loads of companies out there still decide upon GHS labelling using the old method of buying pre-printed red diamond stock and then using a plain old thermal transfer printer to put the labels together. The required hazard pictograms get printed in black, and often the unused red diamonds get covered up with a black ink overprint.

Even though thats a pretty common practice its not always the best idea.

According to the ECHA Guidance on Labelling and Packaging, having empty boxes on your label can confuse people because it looks like a hazard pictogram got accidentally left off. So the guidance suggests completely blacking out any diamonds that dont get used to stop people getting the wrong idea.
